What makes a sales page headline work

A headline has one job: make the right reader keep reading. For a digital product that usually means answering two questions in a few seconds: is this for me? and what do I get? Clever wordplay that hides the answer loses to plain words that state it.

1. Name the buyer or the outcome, ideally both

"For new Etsy sellers" or "Price your first printable" each tell the reader immediately whether to stay. The audience-callout and how-to formulas above do exactly that.

2. Be specific and believable

"In an afternoon" beats "fast". "7 steps" beats "a simple system". Specifics make a claim feel tested. But only use a timeframe or number that's true for a typical buyer; an honest, modest promise sells better than one readers don't believe.

3. Remove the main objection

If buyers usually think "I don't have an audience" or "I'm not a designer", saying "without a big audience" in the headline answers it before they leave.

4. Leave out income promises

"Make $5,000 a month" headlines attract the wrong buyers, are hard to back up and can break advertising rules and consumer-protection law. Describe the task your product helps with instead.

5. Test with real readers

Show three candidates to a few people in your audience and ask which one they'd click and why. Their words often become the final headline.

The headline is only the first line. Our guide on how to write a sales page for a digital product walks through every section below it, and the free digital product price calculator helps you settle the price you'll put under it.

FAQ

Does this use AI?

No. It fills your answers into 12 proven headline formulas with plain JavaScript in your browser, so the results are predictable and you can see which formula produced each one.

Which headline should I pick?

The one a stranger would understand in five seconds: who it's for and what they get. Read your top three out loud to someone in your audience and ask which one they'd click. Clear beats clever.

How long should a sales page headline be?

There's no fixed rule, but most strong headlines are under about 70 characters so they fit on a phone screen without wrapping into a paragraph. Each result shows its length so you can trim.

Can I say how much money buyers will make?

Avoid it. Income claims are tightly regulated (the FTC treats them strictly in the US), most can't be backed up, and they attract the wrong buyers. The generator warns you if your outcome mentions money.

Is anything I type saved?
