Stripe fees on common digital product prices
US standard pricing, one payment with a US card (2.9% + 30¢), and with an international card (4.4% + 30¢):
| Price | US card fee / you keep | International card fee / you keep |
| $5 | $0.45 / $4.55 | $0.52 / $4.48 |
| $9 | $0.56 / $8.44 | $0.70 / $8.30 |
| $17 | $0.79 / $16.21 | $1.05 / $15.95 |
| $27 | $1.08 / $25.92 | $1.49 / $25.51 |
| $47 | $1.66 / $45.34 | $2.37 / $44.63 |
| $97 | $3.11 / $93.89 | $4.57 / $92.43 |
Three things that cost more than the fee
- Refunds: issuing a card refund is free, but Stripe keeps the original fee. A clear refund policy still pays for itself, because a refund is far cheaper than a dispute. Our refund policy generator writes one.
- Disputes: $15 per dispute received, plus $15 more if you counter it (returned only if you win). Put your support email on the download page and in the checkout text so buyers ask you before their bank.
- Very low prices: the fixed 30¢ is 10% of a $3 sale. Bundling small items into one $9 to $27 product usually keeps more per buyer. The price calculator helps you pick a starting price.
Payment Links vs other platforms
Stripe Payment Links add no platform fee on top of the card fee, which is why a $17 product keeps about $16.21 on Stripe. Marketplaces and storefronts add their own cut, and some handle sales tax for you in exchange. FAQ
How much does Stripe charge on a $17 digital product?
On a US Stripe account with standard pricing, a $17 sale paid with a US card costs 2.9% + 30 cents, which is about $0.79, so you keep about $16.21. An international card adds 1.5% (about $0.26 more), and another 1% applies if a currency conversion is needed.
Does Stripe charge extra for Payment Links?
No. Payment Links and Stripe Checkout are included at no extra charge on standard pricing; you pay the normal per-transaction fee for the payment method the buyer uses.
Do I get Stripe's fee back if I refund a sale?
No. Stripe doesn't charge a fee to issue a card refund, but the original processing fee isn't returned, so a refunded $17 US card sale still costs you about $0.79.
What does a chargeback cost on Stripe?
Stripe's pricing page lists a $15 fee for each dispute you receive, and another $15 if you counter it manually, which you get back only if you win. On a small digital product one dispute can cost more than the sale.
What if my buyer pays in euros or another currency?
With Adaptive Pricing turned on, Stripe shows the buyer a local-currency price and applies its conversion fee (2 to 4%) to the buyer's price instead of to you. Without it, a 1% conversion fee can apply to you when the buyer's card needs a conversion.
Is this calculator accurate for my account?
It uses Stripe's published US standard rates as of October 27, 2026. Other countries, custom pricing, sales tax and payout fees are different, so check stripe.com/pricing for your country. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
