How to Sell Digital Products With Stripe Payment Links (Step by Step)

By Revenue Operator · October 25, 2026 · 8 min read

Stripe Payment Links let you sell something with a single URL. You create a product and a price, Stripe gives you a link to a hosted checkout page, and you put that link behind a "Buy" button on your site, in an email or in a bio. You don't need a store builder or any code.

For a first digital product, that's appealing: there's no monthly fee and nothing to install, and the fees are lower than most creator platforms. But Stripe is a payment processor, not a digital-download store. It won't host your files or deliver them, and it won't handle sales tax for you unless you set that up. This guide walks through the whole setup and covers the gaps you need to fill.

We're setting up exactly this for our own $27 product, so the steps below follow Stripe's own documentation (checked October 2026). Stripe changes its dashboard and pricing from time to time, so confirm details on stripe.com before you rely on them. This isn't tax or legal advice.

Setting up Stripe for your first product?

Before you go live, run the free 1-page launch checklist from our 6-page guide. Its checkout section covers the steps people skip: verify your account early, do a test purchase, check the download on mobile, show a refund policy.

The short version

Step 1: Set up the Stripe account properly

Before you create anything, finish the account details Stripe asks for. Two settings matter most for a digital product:

Step 2: Create the product and price

In the Stripe Dashboard, go to the product catalog and add a product:

  1. Name: the name buyers will see at checkout, e.g. "Freelancer Invoice Tracker (Google Sheets)".
  2. Description: one line that says what's in it and how it's delivered, e.g. "Google Sheets template, instant download after payment."
  3. Image: a clean cover or screenshot. It appears on the checkout page and makes it feel like a real product.
  4. Price: one-time, in your currency. For a first template or guide, $9–$29 is a typical range. Our pricing guide covers how to choose.

Step 3: Create the Payment Link

From the product (or from Payment Links in the Dashboard), create a new payment link. The options worth setting:

Stripe gives you a URL like buy.stripe.com/.... Every "Buy" button on your site can point at it.

Step 4: Deliver the files after payment

Stripe won't host or send your files, so pick one of these delivery methods:

Option A: Redirect to a download page (simplest). Set the after-payment redirect to a page on your site, such as /thank-you/, with the download links and a short "start here" note. Stripe's docs say you can add {CHECKOUT_SESSION_ID} to the redirect URL to pass the session ID to your page. If you have a small backend, you can use it to check that the payment really happened before showing the files.

The trade-off: a plain thank-you page can be shared. For a $27 template that risk is usually acceptable. Keep the page out of your sitemap, add a noindex tag, and don't link to it anywhere public.

Option B: Email the files automatically. Stripe sends a checkout.session.completed event when a payment link purchase finishes. You can use it with a webhook, or with an automation tool such as Zapier, to email the buyer a download link or add them to a "customers" list in your email tool.

Option C: Both. Redirect for instant access, and send a follow-up email so the buyer can find the files later. This is what we recommend once you have more than a handful of sales.

Whichever option you pick, turn on Stripe's automatic email receipts so every buyer gets proof of payment with your support email on it.

For a deeper walkthrough of all four delivery options, including verified, expiring links, see how to deliver a digital download after a Stripe payment.

Step 5: Put the link everywhere a buyer might click

Stripe's docs note that if you add UTM parameters to the payment link URL, they're carried through to your redirect URL after purchase. That lets you see which source each buyer came from, e.g. ?utm_source=pinterest.

Step 6: Test it end to end

Use Stripe's test mode (a sandbox) to run a purchase from start to finish before you go live:

  1. Click the buy button on your live page, on your phone as well as your computer.
  2. Pay with a Stripe test card.
  3. Check that the redirect lands on the right page, the files download and open, and the receipt arrives.
  4. Refund the test payment so you know where the refund button is.

Then switch to live mode and create the live link. Test-mode links don't take real payments.

What a $27 sale actually costs

Item Amount
Sale price $27.00
Stripe processing (2.9% + $0.30, US card) −$1.08
You keep $25.92

Things that can change that number:

For comparison, our Gumroad alternatives breakdown shows what you keep on the same $27 sale with Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Payhip, Etsy and others. If you're only deciding between these two, see Gumroad vs Stripe Payment Links.

Sales tax and VAT: the part people skip

When you sell through Stripe Payment Links, you're the seller of record. Some US states tax digital products, and the EU and UK charge VAT on digital sales to consumers from the first sale. Stripe Tax can calculate and collect tax on Payment Links and alert you when you reach a registration threshold, but registering and filing are still your job unless you pay for a plan that covers them.

Practical options for a first product:

  1. Turn on Stripe Tax and let it calculate and collect from the start.
  2. Use a merchant of record (Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad, Paddle and similar), which is legally the seller and handles tax for you, in exchange for higher fees. Our Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip comparison covers those trade-offs. Stripe also has its own merchant-of-record option for Payment Links, listed at 3.5% on top of the usual fees; see Stripe Managed Payments for digital products for who qualifies.
  3. Ask an accountant before your sales grow, especially if you sell internationally.

Checklist

Payment Links handle the "take the money" part well. Your real work is still picking a product people will pay for and getting it in front of them. If you haven't checked that yet, start with how to validate a digital product idea and our launch checklist.
