Stripe Managed Payments for Digital Products: Fees, Who Qualifies and When to Use It

By Revenue Operator · October 27, 2026 · 7 min read

If you sell a template, an ebook or a small software product, the most annoying part isn't the checkout. It's sales tax and VAT. Stripe now has its own answer for that: Managed Payments, Stripe's merchant of record product. Here's what it is, what it costs on a small sale, who can use it, and when it beats plain Stripe, Lemon Squeezy or Gumroad. Everything below was checked against Stripe's and the platforms' own pages on October 27, 2026.

The short answer

What "merchant of record" means, in one paragraph

With plain Stripe, you are the seller. Stripe moves the money, but sales tax and VAT on digital products are your responsibility (Stripe Tax can calculate and collect it, but you still register and file). With a merchant of record, the platform is legally the seller to your customer, so the tax registrations, filings and remittances become its job. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy work this way. Managed Payments brings the same model to a Stripe account.

What it costs on a $20 sale

Here's the arithmetic for one $20 sale paid with a domestic US card, using each company's listed rates.

Setup Listed fee Fee on $20 You keep Who handles sales tax/VAT
Stripe Payment Link (plain) 2.9% + 30¢ $0.88 $19.12 You
Stripe + Managed Payments 3.5% on top of 2.9% + 30¢ $1.58 $18.42 Stripe
Lemon Squeezy 5% + 50¢ $1.50 $18.50 Lemon Squeezy
Gumroad (direct sale) 10% + 50¢ $2.50 $17.50 Gumroad

A few notes from the same pages. Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is needed. Lemon Squeezy says transactions outside the US may carry small additional fees. Gumroad's rate rises to 30% for sales that come through its Discover marketplace. Plain Stripe looks cheapest, but its row leaves out the cost of handling tax yourself: Stripe Tax's no-code option is listed at 0.5% per transaction where you're registered, plus your own time registering and filing.

At low prices the fixed 30¢ or 50¢ matters most. On a $9 product, Managed Payments costs about $0.88 (2.9% + 30¢ is $0.56, plus 3.5% is $0.32), Lemon Squeezy about $0.95 and Gumroad direct about $1.40.

Who qualifies

Stripe's eligibility page is specific, so read it before you plan around Managed Payments. The main points:

So a downloadable template pack or ebook fits. A "template plus a 30-minute setup call" bundle doesn't, as written.

What your buyer sees

This is the part most guides skip. According to Stripe's "How Managed Payments works" page:

None of that is a problem, but tell buyers on your sales page and in your delivery email so a "LINK.COM" line on their statement doesn't surprise them. Surprise charges become disputes.

How it fits with Payment Links

Stripe's docs say Managed Payments works with Stripe Checkout and Payment Links, so the no-code setup from our Stripe Payment Links guide still applies. You still need to deliver the file yourself after payment. Our guide to delivering a digital download after a Stripe payment covers four ways to do that, from a confirmation-page link to a webhook. And if people open your checkout and leave, here's what Stripe can and can't do to recover them.

Where Lemon Squeezy fits now

Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. In a post dated January 28, 2026, Lemon Squeezy's CEO wrote that the team has been building Stripe Managed Payments, that Managed Payments supported merchants in 35+ countries at the time, and that the goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users "an easy way to migrate" to it. Lemon Squeezy's pricing page still lists 5% + 50¢ per transaction, so it remains a working option today. If you're starting fresh and you already have a Stripe account, it's worth checking whether you qualify for Managed Payments before setting up a second platform.

Which one should you pick?

  1. You'd rather not think about tax at all, and you sell a fully automated digital product from a supported country: try Managed Payments on your existing Stripe account. It costs about the same as Lemon Squeezy on a $20 sale.
  2. You want the lowest per-sale fee and you're fine handling tax (or you're under every threshold for now): plain Stripe Payment Links, optionally with Stripe Tax.
  3. Your product includes calls, coaching or done-for-you work: Managed Payments doesn't cover it. Use plain Stripe and handle tax, or a platform whose terms cover services.
  4. You want a marketplace that can send you buyers: Gumroad (with the 30% Discover rate in mind) or a marketplace like Etsy.

For a wider comparison, see Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip, Gumroad vs Stripe Payment Links and how to sell digital products without a website.

The bigger risk isn't the fee

The difference between these setups is about a dollar on a $20 sale. The difference between a product people want and one they don't is every sale. Pick the checkout in an afternoon, then spend your time on the offer, the sales page and getting the first 100 visitors. If you want a day-by-day plan for that, the 30-Day Revenue Operator Pack walks through it, from picking the product to launch week. You can read sample pages first.
