How to Sell Templates Online: Notion, Canva, Google Sheets, Docs and More

By Revenue Operator · October 27, 2026 · 7 min read

Templates are one of the easiest digital products to start with. You solve a problem once (a budget, a content calendar, a client onboarding doc, a set of social graphics) and sell the finished structure to people who don't want to build it themselves. The catch is that every template tool handles copying, licensing and delivery a little differently, and that's where most first sellers get stuck.

This guide covers the whole path: choosing the tool, checking the license, delivering a copy after payment, pricing it and finding the first buyers.

The short answer

  1. Build in the tool your buyer already uses, not the one you like best.
  2. Sell an outcome, like "a client onboarding system", not "a Notion page".
  3. Check the tool's license before you include fonts, photos or elements you didn't make.
  4. Deliver a copy link (or a file) on a private page that opens right after payment.
  5. Price from the time it saves, then check what you keep after fees.
  6. Find buyers where the problem is discussed, and show the template working.

Step 1: Pick the tool your buyer already uses

A template is only useful if the buyer can open it without learning something new. Ask where your buyer already works, then build there:

Your buyer lives in... Typical templates Delivery Our guide
Notion Planners, trackers, client portals, content systems "Duplicate as template" link How to sell Notion templates
Canva Social posts, presentations, media kits, printables Template link How to sell Canva templates
Google Sheets or Excel Budgets, calculators, dashboards, trackers Copy link or .xlsx file How to sell Google Sheets templates
Google Docs or Word Contracts, proposals, SOPs, resumes Copy link or .docx file This guide
PDF or paper Planners, worksheets, checklists PDF download Printables, planners

If you're not sure what to build yet, start with digital product ideas for beginners and test one with the 72-hour validation guide.

Step 2: Sell an outcome, not a file

"Freelancer client onboarding kit: proposal, contract checklist and welcome email, ready to send" sells better than "Google Docs template bundle" because the buyer can picture the result. A few rules that keep templates useful:

Step 3: Check the license before you sell

This is the step most guides skip. You can only sell what you have the right to sell, and each tool has its own rules.

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Read the tool's terms before you launch.

Step 4: Deliver a copy, not your original

Buyers should get their own copy and never be able to edit yours.

Put the link or file on a private thank-you page that opens right after payment. On Stripe Payment Links you can set the after-payment redirect to that page; our guide to delivering a digital download after a Stripe payment walks through it, including keeping the page out of search results. Then make one real test purchase.

Be realistic about sharing: anyone with a copy link can pass it on. At template prices, most sellers accept that and compete on quality, updates and support.

Step 5: Price from the time it saves

A good starting question is "how many hours would this take the buyer to build, and what would they pay to skip that?" Many first templates land between $9 and $29; a bundle or a system with a video walkthrough can go higher. Our pricing guide and the free digital product price calculator help you pick a number and see what you keep.

Here's what Stripe's standard card fee (2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card payment, checked October 27, 2026) leaves you at common prices. This is arithmetic, not a forecast:

Price Stripe fee You keep
$9 $0.56 $8.44
$19 $0.85 $18.15
$29 $1.14 $27.86

International cards and currency conversion add to the fee, and marketplaces charge their own fees on top, so check the platform's pricing page at your price.

Step 6: Write a page that shows the template working

Template buyers want to see inside before they pay. Your page needs:
