How to Sell Canva Templates: Licensing Rules, Delivery and First Buyers

By Revenue Operator · October 27, 2026 · 7 min read

Canva templates are one of the easiest digital products to start: you already design in Canva, your buyer doesn't need design skills, and delivery is a single link. The part people get wrong isn't the design. It's the licensing. Canva's license has specific rules for templates, and Canva says it may suspend or terminate accounts that break it.

We checked Canva's license and help pages on October 27, 2026 (links at the bottom). This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice, and Canva can change its terms, so read them before you sell.

The short answer

  1. Design an original template for one specific job.
  2. Check every element. If any Pro content is in it, you can only sell it as a Canva template link, never as a PDF or image file.
  3. Create a template link, so each buyer gets their own copy and your original stays safe.
  4. Deliver the link in a short access PDF or on a private thank-you page.
  5. Price from the job it does, then bring the traffic yourself.

Step 1: Know what Canva's license allows

Canva's help article on designing products for sale says you can use both Free and Pro content to design and sell templates, with conditions:

From the Content License Agreement:

To spot Pro content, Canva's licensing explainer says it shows a small crown icon when you hover over it in the library.

The practical rule: delivering a template link? Free and Pro content are both fine if the design is original. Selling a downloadable file? Use only Free content and your own uploads.

Step 2: Pick a template job, not a template style

"Instagram templates" is crowded. "Carousel templates for mortgage brokers explaining first-time buyer steps" is something a specific person searches for and can picture using this week. Strong Canva template jobs are ones the buyer repeats or does under pressure: social posts for one profession, creator media kits and rate cards, client onboarding packs for service businesses, coaching workbooks (see our workbook guide), or event packs for one type of event.

Before designing 40 pages, run the 72-hour test in validating a digital product idea. For more starting points, see digital product ideas for beginners.

Step 3: Build a template buyers can't break

Most buyers aren't designers. Use clear placeholder text ("Your headline, max 6 words"), group and lock decorative elements, keep to a small set of fonts and colors, and add a "How to use" page at the front. Then open your own template link in a second, free Canva account and edit a page as a buyer would.

Step 4: Deliver it with a template link

Canva's help page on sharing a template link gives the steps: open the design, select Share, then Template link (under See all if hidden), then Create template link and Copy. Details that matter when selling:

Then choose how buyers get it. An access PDF (preview image, the link as a big button, how-to-use steps, support email) works on any platform that delivers files; see how to sell a PDF online. Or use a private thank-you page: Stripe Payment Links can redirect buyers after payment to a page holding the link, as covered in delivering a download after a Stripe payment.

It's the same idea as a "make a copy" or "Duplicate as template" link for Google Sheets templates and Notion templates.

Step 5: Price it and do the fee math

Price from the job the template saves, not the page count. Check three to five comparable templates and start near the middle unless yours is clearly narrower and more complete. The free digital product price calculator shows its working.

Selling on your own site with Stripe, the standard rate on Stripe's pricing page is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction. Arithmetic from that rate, before taxes (international cards and currency conversion cost more):

Price Stripe fee You keep
$9 $0.56 ~$8.44
$15 $0.74 ~$14.26
$19 $0.85 ~$18.15
$27 $1.08 ~$25.92

Marketplaces add their own fees; compare them in Gumroad alternatives, and if you're weighing Etsy, read selling printables outside Etsy.

Step 6: Make the listing show the result

Lead with a filled-in example (labeled as an example), show a short screen recording of editing it in Canva, list exactly what's included (pages, sizes, free Canva account needed), state the license plainly (buyer's own use, no reselling or sharing the link) and say how delivery works. Our sales page examples show the section order, and the headline generator helps with the title.

Step 7: Find your first buyers

Templates are visual, so they're easy to show without a following: Pinterest pins of filled-in examples, helpful answers in communities where your buyer hangs out (within their self-promotion rules), one free template as a lead magnet, and five people in the niche trying it free and telling you what confused them. The longer plan is in how to sell digital products without an audience.
