Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip: Which Is Best for Your First Digital Product?
Choosing where to sell your first template or guide shouldn't take a week. But the fee pages are hard to compare, because each platform quotes a percentage that measures something different. Some include card processing and some don't. One has a marketplace that charges a different rate. Tax handling varies too.
This comparison is for one specific situation: you're selling your first digital product, you're probably in the US, and you want to keep the most money with the least admin. Fees below come from each platform's own pricing pages as checked in October 2026. Platforms change their pricing, so confirm before you sign up.
The short version
- Lemon Squeezy: lowest effective fee for US card sales on a small product, handles sales tax as merchant of record, no marketplace. Good default if you'll bring your own traffic.
- Gumroad: fastest to start and the only one of the three with a marketplace (Discover) that can send you buyers. Most expensive per direct sale.
- Payhip: a low percentage on the free plan, with paid plans that cut the fee further as you grow. You connect your own Stripe or PayPal and pay their processing fees on top.
Fees at a glance

| Platform fee | 10% + $0.50 direct; 30% on Discover marketplace sales | 5% + $0.50 | 5% (Free), 2% (Plus), 0% (Pro) |
| Card processing | Charged on top for direct sales, per Gumroad's help center (roughly 2.9% + $0.30) | Included for standard US card sales; small extra fees can apply to international and some payment methods | Stripe or PayPal charge their standard rates on top |

What you actually keep
Here's approximate take-home on a US buyer paying by card, before income tax, using the published rates above. Real numbers can vary slightly with payment method and buyer location.
| Sale price | Gumroad direct | Gumroad via Discover | Lemon Squeezy | Payhip Free (Stripe) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $9 | ~$7.04 | ~$6.30 | ~$8.05 | ~$7.99 |
| $27 | ~$22.72 | ~$18.90 | ~$25.15 | ~$24.57 |
| $47 | ~$40.14 | ~$32.90 | ~$44.15 | ~$42.99 |
On a $27 product, the difference between Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad direct is about $2.43 per sale. Across 40 sales that's roughly $97. Not life-changing at first, but it adds up, and it's worth knowing before you commit.
What "merchant of record" means and why it matters
When a platform is the merchant of record, it is legally the seller. It calculates, collects and pays sales tax and VAT in the places where that's required, and it handles a lot of billing support. You get paid your share.
If you sell through raw Stripe or PayPal buttons instead, those taxes are generally your responsibility. For a first product, having a platform deal with tax is worth a lot, especially because digital product tax rules vary by country and US state. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy both act as merchant of record. Payhip says on its pricing page that it collects, reports and remits digital EU/UK VAT and US/Canadian sales tax for you. This isn't tax advice; if you have specific questions, ask an accountant.

Gumroad: best if you want built-in discovery
Pros
- Very fast to set up. Many people can list a product in minutes.
- Discover, its marketplace, can put your product in front of buyers who've never heard of you.
- Supports free and pay-what-you-want products, which is handy for a lead magnet.
- Merchant of record, so tax is handled.
Cons
- Highest fee on direct sales, and card processing is charged on top.
- Discover sales cost 30%, though those are buyers you wouldn't have found otherwise.
Pick it if you have no traffic plan yet and want a chance at marketplace discovery, or if you need to be live today.
Lemon Squeezy: best for the lowest fee with tax handled
Pros
- 5% + $0.50 with standard US card processing included, the lowest effective rate of the three for typical small US sales.
- Merchant of record for tax.
- Free products for lead magnets, discount codes, affiliates and built-in email marketing (free up to 500 subscribers, per its pricing page).
- Secure, signed download links.
Cons
- No marketplace. Every buyer comes from your own traffic.
- New stores go through an activation review, which can take a few days.
- Some extra fees apply to international transactions and certain payment methods.
- Lemon Squeezy was acquired by Stripe. In a January 28, 2026 update, its CEO said the team is building Stripe Managed Payments (Stripe's own merchant-of-record product) and plans to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate to it. If you already use Stripe, see Stripe Managed Payments for digital products for fees and who qualifies.
Pick it if you'll drive your own traffic through communities, articles, Pinterest or partners, and you want tax handled at the lowest fee.
Payhip: best if you expect volume, or want money right away
Pros
- Same features on every plan, including the free one.
- Payouts land in your connected account right after each sale.
- As revenue grows, Plus (2%) and Pro (0%) can beat the others on fees.
- Says it handles EU/UK VAT and US/Canadian sales tax on digital products.
Cons
- No marketplace.
- You need your own Stripe and/or PayPal account, with their standard fees and their own verification.
- The paid plans only make sense once you're selling consistently. The $29/month Plus plan saves 3% of revenue, so it breaks even at around $970 a month in sales.
Pick it if you already have traffic or expect steady monthly sales, or if you want payouts immediately.
What about Stripe Payment Links or PayPal buttons?
They're cheaper per sale (Stripe's standard US card rate is 2.9% + $0.30), but you handle sales tax compliance yourself, and neither delivers files on its own. You'd need a separate way to send the download. For a first product, a platform that handles delivery and tax usually saves more time than it costs.
Setup checklist, whichever you choose
- Start payout verification on day one. Identity checks and bank details can take a few days, and you don't want a live product you can't get paid for.
- Create the paid product with a clear name, a short description that matches your sales page, and the final zip file.
- Create a free product for your lead magnet if the platform supports it. It collects emails and delivers the file for you.
- Write your refund policy into the product description and your site footer. Keep it short and specific, like "full refund within 14 days, just email us."
- Make a test purchase (test mode or a real purchase you refund) and check the receipt email, the download link and the file itself on a phone.
- Customize the receipt with a thank-you, a "start here" pointer and your support email.
- Add the checkout link to every buy button on your sales page, then click each one.
How to decide in two minutes
- No traffic plan and want marketplace exposure? Gumroad.
- Bringing your own traffic, want tax handled and the lowest fee? Lemon Squeezy.
- Already selling steadily, or want instant payouts? Payhip.
Whatever you pick, switching later mostly means changing one link on your sales page. Don't let this decision delay your launch. Distribution matters far more than a couple of dollars per sale. If you're starting from zero, read how to sell digital products without an audience, then use the launch checklist to make sure checkout, delivery and receipts all work before launch day.
